In the final episode of our Danish humour series, Vigdis unpacks the linguistic and cultural layers that make Danish jokes so hard to translate—literally and socially. From modal adverbs and flat intonation to national in-jokes and shared socialisation, we explore why understanding humour in Denmark takes more than just learning the language. With input from international residents, reflections on Danish comedy, and a look at gelotophobia (the fear of being laughed at), this episode helps you make sense of the deeper cultural currents that shape Danish wit—and shows you how to laugh along without missing the point. *** A huge thank you to everybody who contributed to the making of the series: Gintare, Reinhard, Allan, Eskil, and, of course, all the people who were kind enough to share their thoughts as we chased them down with our mic on the streets. In Part Two of our series on Danish humour, Vigdis takes a closer look at how Danes use humour across different settings—especially at work—where jokes often ignore hierarchy and formality. You'll learn how self-irony plays a key role in everyday interactions, how humour is used to build trust (and sometimes accidentally destroy it), and why timing, tone, and cultural awareness are essential for successful delivery. With Reddit insights, movie tips, and real-life examples, this episode helps internationals better understand when and how to join in on the Danish joke. *** A huge thanks to everybody who contributed to the making of the series: Gintare, Reinhard, Allan, Eskil, and, of course, all the people who were kind enough to share their thoughts as we chased them down with our mic on the streets. Why do Danes joke in such a dry, ironic, and often dark way—and why does it leave so many internationals confused? In this three-part mini-series, Vigdis dives deep into the world of Danish humour, exploring how Danes use irony, sarcasm, and self-deprecation to build trust, challenge norms, and connect with others. From workplace banter to stand-up shows, film quotes to everyday awkward moments, this series unpacks the cultural codes behind the jokes, the unwritten social rules, and the linguistic subtleties that make Danish humour so unique—and so difficult to decode. Whether you’re new to Denmark or just trying to understand your Danish colleagues better, this series helps you laugh with the Danes (instead of wondering if you’re the punchline). In Part One of this three-part series, we begin by asking: Is Danish humor really that different? And how can you tell when a Dane is joking – or just being blunt? *** A big thanks to everybody who contributed to the making of the series: Gintare, Reinhard, Allan,…

Things are never quite as scary when you’ve got friends. But what happens if you leave them all behind? Uproot your entire life and move to a new country? To Denmark of all places! Where people are notoriously reserved and will do almost anything to avoid making eye contact with strangers... How on earth is anyone expected to make friends here? Newcomers to Denmark find it challenging to make Danish friends. But why is that? Are there cultural differences we should be more aware of? What can newcomers do to form these valuable Danish friendships they need to truly feel at home? And what can Danes do? Why aren't Danes more open to people that cross our path, like, say, the English or Americans, and more ready for a spontaneous drink after work? That is what we set out to explore in this miniseries, by talking to both Danes and foreigners and looking into some research on the topic. Welcome to “The Swap Language Culture Guide to Denmark” and our brand-new three-part miniseries on Friendships. *** A big thanks…
